Roanoke
EMS is a non-profit volunteer agency within the city of Roanoke.
We work in conjunction with the Roanoke
City Fire/EMS
Department to provide pre-hospital
emergency care to the citizens of Roanoke City.
The
Roanoke EMS crew is the only volunteer crew in the city. We operate
from Station # 1 at the corner of 4th Street and Day Avenue in Old
Southwest.
Currently, we have more than 30 full and associate members.
Volunteers staff the station from 7 p.m. - 7 a.m. each day and all
weekend. Volunteers are divided
into shifts, which run 7 p.m. - 7 am Monday-Friday and two shifts of
7 a.m. – 7 p. m. and 7 p.m.- 7 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
R.E.M.S. volunteers answer thousands of 911 emergency calls each
year. In addition, volunteers stand by at many city festivals,
parades, Civic Center activities, concerts and sporting events as
well as participate in health fairs, mock disaster trainings and
demonstrations for local schools.
The crews that run from Day Avenue are recognized as "Medic
1" and "Medic 101." Our territory runs from Salem
Avenue downtown to Electric Road in the Mudlick area on the west
to Franklin Road on the south border and 581 at the east. Included
are the areas of Raleigh Court, Grandin Court, Historic Old Southwest, Wasena, South Roanoke and Downtown. Medic 1 and 101 also are the
first call backup units for the other six city rescue squads.
